“What’s your favourite scary movie?” There is no shortage of scarily gruesome horror films these days. Films such as Halloween (1978) and Scream (1996) (a film which kick-started the slasher film revival in the 1990s) are famous in their own right. But there are films that go forgo the slasher favourite, the butcher’s knife, in favour of more creative ways of creating maximum gore-factor. So, to celebrate the release of Texas Chainsaw 3D (in cinemas now), we have put together a list of the 5 goriest horror movie scenes. (Cringing, optional!)
THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (1974) – KIRK’S DEATH
We kick off our list with the first of a series of gruesome deaths from the original film, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. In search of gas, young couple, Kirk and Pam leave their friends behind and come across a house. With nobody seemingly home and finding the front door unlocked, Kirk enters the house and comes face to face with Leatherface who decides to give his sledgehammer a workout on Kirk’s head! The scene amps up the scare-factor with the unsuspecting Pam still waiting outside. The only questions remains then is, will Leatherface decide to break out his chainsaw once he realises he has another visitor?
HOSTEL (2005) – EYEWATERING
From Eli Roth and Quentin Tarantino comes the story of a group of backpackers who encounter more than they bargained for when they find themselves being hunted and sold by a Dutch businessman. His business? Torture. With no one he can trust, college student, Paxton goes in search of his disappearing friends whilst desperately trying to stay alive. But, after finding fellow traveller, Kana, Paxton must make a gruesome choice. Expect to a pull a lot of cringe faces in this scene involving a wayward eyeball and pair of scissors. Need we say more?!
SAW III (2006) – THE RACK TRAP
Keeping with the theme of torture, we come to this little film you may have heard of. The third instalment in the Saw franchise sees the return of Tobin Bell as Jigsaw, Shawnee Smith as Amanda Young, and Donnie Wahlberg (Saw II). The film follows Jeff, a married father who is subjected to a series of tests set by Jigsaw after the death of his young son. And so, he introduces his latest invention of pain, The Rack Trap. (Yep, it’s as terrifying as it sounds!) Jeff’s task? Risk his own life to free the man strapped to the mechanism. Simple? Not quite. The man Jeff is tasked to save is the man who killed his son. Watch Jeff struggle with his conscience whilst witnessing the man who has wronged him get twisted up! Trust us, this scene will make you want to shake out your own limbs after watching just to make sure they are still there!
NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (1984) – BLOODBATH (AHEM, BED!)
In what can only be described as the bloodiest scene of the entire film is Glen Lantz’s (played by Johnny Depp) gruesome end at the hands of Freddy Kreuger (Robert Englund). As if scaring us all into being unable to sleep wasn’t enough, Freddy serves up something entirely new for young Glen. Pulling him (literally) into his own bed, Glen is reduced to a terrifying spray of blood and guts that erupt from the bed in a shocking sea of red. We shudder just thinking about it!
DEAD ALIVE (1992) – WHEN THE LAWNMOWER PROVES HANDY
After Lionel Cosgrove’s mother, Vera, is bitten by an infected rat-money, she turns into a flesh-hungry zombie. The disease inevitably spreads, leading to a mass of zombies terrorising the townspeople. The final scene in the film is perhaps the most gruesome scene have ever encountered as Lionel takes on the unenviable task of defeating a seemingly endless army of zombies…with a lawnmower. Yes, that’s right, a lawnmower! Expect pints of blood and limbs aplenty in this, the bloodiest horror scene involving another household appliance – a blender. We promise, after watching this film, mowing the garden will never be the same again! Blood smoothie anyone?
